The British Pullman is a unique British railway train that takes its passengers back in time a century, to an era when travelling was an art form.

There is an extraordinary train whose carriages were manufactured in the 1920s. Authentic carriages that conceal a rich history. The interiors of the carriages shine with polished wood, decorated with intricate inlays, soft plush armchairs and lamps straight from the 1920s. Some of them carried kings and queens, others participated in important political events, and still others served Sir Winston Churchill. They are true masterpieces of applied art, preserved thanks to many years of renovation. Interestingly, the passengers on this train also included members of the royal family – Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Today, anyone who boards the train becomes part of this unique tradition.

In February, I had the opportunity to visit the British Pullman – Belmond Train. The train was preparing to depart on another journey in the 1940s, with a certain criminal mystery in the background. This meant that the entire journey was meticulously planned and styled. Already on the platform at London Victoria, we were greeted by an exclusive singer with a low, velvety voice singing jazz standards. We go to the lounge for a welcome drink.

We observe other travellers. Participants in this adventure are expected to succumb to the atmosphere and imitate the fashion of those years by dressing appropriately (simple hairstyles and a multitude of decorations, frills, bows or feathers in their wardrobe, elegant gloves). The ladies are elegant, the gentlemen are charming.

The entire journey promises to be an exciting day.

A trip on the British Pullman train is also a culinary treat. Multi-course meals prepared by top chefs are served on board. The menu changes depending on the season, but always combines classic British flavours with modern interpretations. The products used in the preparation of the meals are sourced from local producers and farmers that we pass during the journey. Each meal is served on porcelain and crystal, accompanied by carefully selected wines and other beverages. It is a true fine dining experience – only on the rails.
