My great grandfather was a baker in London, England. His bakery was in the basement of his house. He did not believe in wasting wood or coal so he cooked all the family meals in his already hot ovens. My grandmother’s job as a child was to bring the food up the stairs to the family and she learned to cook in the process.
I first learned to cook from my grandmother. This means that most of my recipes are very old and very traditional.
When I went to school, there were classes in home economics where they tried to teach me modern methods of cooking. I tried their methods but the food was not as good and my family’s food so I abandoned them and stuck to the old ways.
I have cooked soup in Scotland, pies in the Philippines and cheesy jacket potatoes at church - and much, much more - for over 40 years and my basic, traditional recipes have never let me down.
I am now a Baptist Church minister but from 1997 until 2003 I was one of the tutors on the English Language programme at the University of Liverpool.
